I met her at a party at a friend’s house. I introduced myself. We chatted a little. I went on my way. Later I learned that her husband of ten years had just died a few months before, leaving her alone with three children.

“What was I going to do—introduce her as the newly bereaved? Besides, she wants everyone to think she’s strong.”
I said it before. I’ll say it again. I think our society should let us wear signs: Fragile. Broken Heart. Handle with Care.
Application: Don’t worry about when to apply the value of compassion. If we stick around long enough, compassion will find us.
